Save Your Sight This Summer!
As the earth tilts towards the sun once again, we’ll see some rising temperatures and an increase in exposure to ultraviolet rays. This is prime time to be vigilant with use of sunscreen to protect your skin as well as sunwear to protect your eyes.
Damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays include formation of cataracts, increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and visible signs of aging of the skin.

Swimming Pool Safety
In previous columns we have talked about the need for sunblock for the skin around the eyes as well as ultraviolet filtering sunglasses, however, there is another very important safety precaution that should be considered when swimming. That is contact lens safety.
Many people use contact lenses in swimming pools, hot tubs, and lakes, but not many people know that this could lead to very serious and potentially blinding ocular infections. The organism that I am referring to is called Acanthamoeba. As its name implies, this organism is an amoeba that his commonly found in tap water, swimming pools, lakes, soil, air, and dust.

Vision Care Through the Ages
As an optometrist, I am often asked when a child should have his first eye examination. Children’s visual systems are not fully developed at birth, therefore, the first examination is usually at age 6 months.
By that time, it is possible to determine whether a baby has significant nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
