Making the most of your eyewear dollars

So many people are feeling the pinch of the economy right now that I thought a column on quality versus cost of eyewear would be useful.

When it comes to frames, you’ll definitely pay a considerable premium for a licensed name, however, there are many frame manufacturers that produce comparable products without the brand name.  If you go with the unlicensed frame, you’ll get a great discount without compromising the quality of the product.

Frame materials such as titanium or memory metals are very lightweight and durable materials that are also resistant to corrosion and do not cause nickel allergies on skin.  Memory metal frames are ones that are bendable at the nose bridge and the ear pieces without breaking.  These are great for kids’ eyewear or sports eyewear as they are very unlikely to break. 

If you need prescription sunwear, there are many frames that include a sunglass clip at no additional cost.  This option is less expensive than buying a separate pair of sunglasses, but you still get the benefits of both.  The other option is to use photochromic lenses that darken with ultraviolet exposure, however, it’s important to note that photochromic lenses do not get as dark inside a car as they do outdoors.  If you need them mostly for driving, go with a sun clip instead.

When it comes to lenses, however, you do get what you pay for.  Look for things like multi-layered anti-reflective coatings that come with a good warranty.  For example, our anti-reflective lenses come with up to two years of replacements, as many as you need, at no additional charge.  Our coatings include scratch protection and ultraviolet blockers as well at no additional charge.  When comparison shopping, warranties are an important consideration.  Hassle-free replacements are always appreciated when you need them.
